The Beauty Behind Our Words

By Andrea Merrell

“I’m putting so much time into my writing, but I always wonder if my words are really making a difference. Do I have what it takes? How do I know if my stories are truly reaching the heart of my readers?” the woman asked.

As writers, we all have these questions and doubts from time to time. Even when we know that God has called us to write for Him, we wonder … Am I doing enough? Am I speaking truth? Am I penning my words or His? Is anyone even paying attention? Should I keep going?

I hear these questions often. When we begin to doubt—ourselves, our calling, God—we soon come to the conclusion that our words are meaningless. They have no value. So, what’s the point?

The point is this: writing for the Lord is a divine calling. It also comes with a responsibility to trust Him completely and obey whatever He puts on our heart.

I love this quote by Johann Sebastian Bach: “I play the notes as they are written, but it is God who makes the music.” He believed in the divine inspiration behind the music, knowing that he could perform the notes, but the true essence and beauty came from a higher power.

When we apply that logic to our writing and believe in the divine inspiration behind the words, it changes our perspective. We realize that the words don’t come from us but from Him. We are only the channel through which He shares encouragement and hope. Peace and Joy. Healing and comfort. Words of life. He is the One who stirs the heart.

Jesus called Himself the Vine. We are simply the branches. He said that without Him (and without abiding in Him) we can do nothing (John 15:5). That applies to everything in our lives, including our writing. But when we partner with Him and pen the words He gives us, we can trust in the beauty behind our words. After all, Ecclesiastes 3:11 says, “He has made everything beautiful in its time” (NKJV). That includes my words. And yours.
