The Appointed Time for Writers

By Andrea Merrell

Has God given you a dream? A vision? Have you waited, worked hard, and prayed but feel discouraged because you see no results?

For writers, the road can seem long and lonely. We sometimes feel as if we’re on a solitary journey toward a destination God has placed on our heart, yet we wonder if we’ll ever get there. We see others around us succeed. They win contests, get contracts, and even make the best-seller list.

So what’s our problem?

Let me suggest that maybe our appointed time has not yet come.

When we look through the Bible, we see many who walked that long road to their destination. Abraham waited twenty-five years for God’s promise of a son. Joseph suffered rejection by his brothers and false accusations that put him in prison for thirteen years before he was released and promoted. But both men believed God and never gave up on their dream.

One writer says we must always remember that God has a scheduled time for our dreams to be fulfilled. Habakkuk 2:3 says, “For the vision is yet for an appointed time; but at the end it will speak, and it will not lie. Though it tarries, wait for it because it will surely come. It will not tarry" (NKJV).

Ecclesiastes 3:1 tells us, “To everything there is a seasona time for every purpose under heaven" (NKJV).

While Abraham waited for his son Isaac, God was working in him and grooming him to become the “father of many nations” (Genesis 17:5). Between the time Joseph went from the pit to the prison to the palace, God was refining him. Preparing him for his destiny. Joseph made the best of those waiting years by maintaining his hope in God and serving in whatever way he could. When the time was right (God’s timing), his dreams came to pass.

Don’t let your passion wane, and never give up on your dream. When God calls you to write for Him, He has a plan, a purpose, and a divine timetable.
