Nine Ways to Be Still Before the Lord
By Diana Leagh Matthews
In my last post, I discussed the benefits of holding a business meeting with God concerning our writing. But how do you hold a business meeting with the Lord? Let’s review.
I begin with a time of praise and adoration. That can
look different at each meeting or for each person. Here are a few ideas to try
or maybe combine several at one time.
1. Listen
to praise music. Listen to your favorite praise
songs. Choose songs that speak to your
soul and draw you closer to the Lord.
2. Sing
to the Lord. Whether singing along to praise songs,
lifting your voice a cappella, or utilizing another form of accompaniment, lift
your voice to the Lord in song and praise.
3. Write Scripture.
Write out one or two verses of Scripture that speak to your heart and/or need.
Meditate on the verse(s) once they’ve been written out.
4. Speak
the names of Jesus. I enjoy using the ABCs to speak the
names of Jesus. It helps me concentrate on who He is and focus on His goodness.
5. Go
for a long drive in the country. Sometimes just getting
away from everything and enjoying the quietness of the country and car is a
great way to still our minds and focus on the Lord.
6. Take
a walk. A walk is a great time to meditate on the Lord,
enjoy nature’s beauty, and prepare our minds and hearts for our meeting. Depending
on the location, maybe there is a bench or picnic table when a break is needed
or to transition into some quiet time.
7. Journal.
Write out your thoughts and feelings. Sometimes an info dump helps us focus on
the Lord.
8. List
your gratitudes. Focus on the aspects of life you’re
thankful for and how the Lord has already blessed your life. Praise the Lord
for who He is and what He’s done for your life
9. Coloring.
Inspirational coloring pages are easy to find or print off. I find my mind
stills as I’m coloring. This can also be true for painting, whether it is on a
canvas or ceramics.
What are some ways you still your mind and praise the Lord? How have your efforts benefited your writing? We would love to hear your suggestions.
