Writer, What’s Your Superpower?

By Andrea Merrell

I received a card from a precious friend following a recent back surgery. The card itself was a blessing, but the words she penned took me by surprise: Writing and encouraging … that’s your superpower.

Wow. Superpower? I’d certainly never looked at what I do in that light. But in reality, we all possess a superpower—gifts, talents, and abilities given to us by our Creator. We may not see in ourselves what others see, but God never intends for us to take our special giftings for granted.

So, writer, what’s your superpower? Do you know? Have you discovered it? Has someone pointed it out to you? Lets look at a few areas of influence and expertise that might help you discover your special gifting:

Social Media Guru: Maybe you’re one who knows how to navigate all forms of social media, use them wisely, and teach others in the meantime.

Marketing Mogul: While this is my Achilles heel, I know folks who are amazingly gifted at all sorts of marketing and promoting others.

Artist: Perhaps you have the ability to create beautiful artistic pieces. This could extend to creating book covers or drawings for children’s books.

Teacher: Maybe you have the gift of sharing knowledge with others.

Mentor: A mentor is one who is willing to take another under her wing and guide them along their journey, especially in writing.

Speaker: Do you have the gift of gab? Can you hold the attention of an audience? Has God given you stories to tell that inspire others?

Administrator: You might be the one to help organize an event and keep everything in order.

Helper: Perhaps you avoid the limelight and prefer to serve behind the scenes. Nothing would ever be accomplished without those who are simply willing to serve.

Prayer Warrior: Has God given you a burden for others? Nothing is more special than knowing someone is praying for you and your needs.

Encourager: We all need encouragement from time to time. Don’t ever miss an opportunity to lift someone’s spirit and let them know how special they are.

Photographer: Maybe you’re great with a camera. This skill can be used in so many ways, from headshots to memes.

IT Tech: This person knows the ins and outs of computer programs and software. We all need someone skilled in this area to call on when we need help.

Editor: Do you have an eye for detail? Help your fellow writers. Volunteer to be a beta reader or critique partner and share valuable feedback.

Writer: No matter what you write—devotions, articles, Bible studies, novels, poetry, nonfiction, children’s books, blogs, or newspaper articles—put your whole heart into whatever you write, especially when writing for the Lord. You never know what He has in store for the words you pen and whose life might be changed forever by what they read.

Kindness: Whatever we do should be done with love and kindness.

Do you see yourself in any of these categories? No matter what your strengths happen to be, don’t hesitate to share them with your fellow writers. Sow kindness and generosity. What others have given to you, pay forward. Then watch what God does. After all, the Bible says:

Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you (Luke 6:38 NKJV).

The Message puts it this way:

Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back—given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.”

My point? What good is a superpower if we don’t use it to bless others?

Do you have other superpowers to add to the list? We would love to hear from you.

  1. Thanks for this, Andrea! We often think less of ourselves and ask "what do I have to offer." This list is a great reminder that each of us does, in fact, have a super power. I often think my talents or "super powers" are no big deal - anybody could do this particular thing. And that's not necessarily true. So today, I'm going to pause and thank God for giving me my specific super power to be used to do the task He's given me in this writing journey.

    1. The truth is that too many of us "think less of ourselves" than we should. We need to see ourselves as God sees us and embrace the gifts He gives us to bless others. You have many superpowers! :)
