Writer, Are You Doing What You Love?

It’s been said that if you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.

Many people start out using their God-given gifts, talents, and abilities, while others have to wait for the right door to open. For those whom God has called to write for Him, sometimes the wait seems long.

Maybe you’re working a full-time job (one you’re not crazy about) that leaves little time to do what you want to do. Or perhaps you’re raising small children or caring for elderly parents. Maybe you have health issues that keep you from attaining your goals.

Are you writing devotions while longing to be a novelist? Maybe you're an editor who longs to leave your comfort zone and be a speaker. Or maybe you're a speaker who aspires to write an inspirational self-help book. 

The good news is God doesn’t waste a single moment or experience in our lives. The Bible says He has given each of us “a gift from His great variety of spiritual gifts,” and we are to “use them well to serve one another” (I Peter 4:10 NLT). But sometimes it takes a while for those gifts to develop or that right door to open.

The Word For You Today says:

Paul worked as a tentmaker to finance his calling as a preacher. Moses spent two-thirds of his life getting ready for his real assignment: leading the children of Israel into the promised land. God never wastes experiences. Often, the wisdom you glean from a job you don’t want equips you to succeed in the one you do—the one God has chosen for you. So keep growing and keep believing God. Then, when He opens the door, you will be ready to walk through it.

I’ve found this to be true in my own life. As I look back over the years to my various jobs and all the things I experienced—both good and bad—I can see how God trained and prepared me to best utilize my gifts at the right time. Now, as a writer, editor, and encourager, I’m finally able to do what I love.

If you’re not where you want to be on your writing journey, be patient. Bloom where you’re planted, as the old saying goes, and whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men (Colossians 3:23 NKJV). He will give you the desires of your heart as you trust and take delight in Him.
