A Writer Needs Her Chocolate
By Andrea Merrell
Have you ever had one of those
days? You know, the kind that drains the very life out of you. As writers, I’m
sure we’ve all experienced these times when absolutely nothing seems to go
right.
I had one of these days recently. My back ached, and my head throbbed. I had an important edit to finish, but I couldn’t concentrate. My eyelids kept threatening to slam shut. I tried a cup of coffee and a brisk walk. No change. I sat down at my computer and tried my best to pull my thoughts together so I could focus on the task at hand. But all I wanted to do was take a nap—or an extended vacation.
That’s when I spotted it. The
dark chocolate bar lying innocently on the edge of my desk.
My eyes widened, and every nerve
in my body perked up. I had forgotten it was there. But it definitely called my
name.
It did the trick. Ahhhh …
now to get back to work.
That’s when I realized that
sometimes a girl (or guy) just needs a little chocolate.
That’s also when the Lord
reminded me that He is always with me, ready to help with whatever I need. His
Word says all I have to do is ask. Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and
I will do it! (John 14:14 NLT).
Rather than depending on the
chocolate—or coffee, or naps, or vacations—to bring me back into balance, I
should have been talking to Him.
No matter what you write, there will always be days when the words won’t come. When nothing flows. When you can’t find the inspiration you so desperately need. When you’d rather be anywhere but your computer. There might even be days you’re tempted to quit.
But don’t give up, and don’t lose
heart. The Bible tells us Jesus understands our needs, our desires, and our
weaknesses. He was tempted in every way but without sin. He is ready, willing,
and more than able to come to our rescue whenever we call out to Him in faith.
When He places His call on us to write for Him, He will equip us with
everything we need.
So remember … sometimes a writer just needs a little chocolate, but she always needs Jesus.
